Warning over bogus police officers

Police in Southampton are issuing a warning to be aware of some bogus police officers thought to be operating in the area.

There have been reports of people not in uniform calling at the homes of foreign residents in the city claiming to be from the ‘Hampshire Immigration Police’. They ask to be let in and for details such as bank accounts and ID papers.

There is not a ‘Hampshire Immigration Police Service’ and those claiming to be from it are thought to be trying to get identification details from people for criminal purposes.

Police advise residents that if such people call at their home they should to not let them and call the real police immediately on 999.

A real police officer will always show you their ID card and will be happy for you to check it. You can call the main Hampshire Constabulary number on 0845 045 45 45 to further check if an officer is genuine.

It also advisable to install and use a door chain so that you can keep this on while answering your door.

Do not leave valuables on display!

We are experiencing an increase in the number of thefts from vehicles in the roads surrounding the University. We believe that this is down to good security here on campus forcing the thieves to try their luck off site. A local police officer found 170 vehicles with property on display the other day. Most of these are believed to belong to students.
